The site is located to the north of El-Khattara, facing of the mountain Gebel el-Hamam, at the entry to Wadi Subeira on the east bank of the Nile. The road leading to the mountain is partially cut in the rock.

The site was reported twice by B. Porter and R.L.B. Moss in their Topographical Bibliography,[1] once as El-Khattara and for the second time as Gebel el-Hammam. The mountain Gebel el-Hammam was a source of good quality sandstone.[2] K. Sethe suggested that the sandstone block found in Kom Ombo which was used for the door of Hatshepsut could come from there,[3] for Kom Ombo is located only about 15 miles south from the quarry.[4] This remains an open question as the door from Kom Ombo is missing now.[5] K. Zibelius was convinced that the sandstone from there served for the construction of the temple at Kom Ombo.[6]

At the entry to Wadi Subeira, Wadjet-reneput ordered to carve a small stela commemorating his visit to this place. High Steward of the King was sent to this region in order to conduct a new inspection.[7]
