Head and lower part of the statue were excavated by the Egyptian Expedition of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; acquired by the museum in the division of finds in 1929. The torso of the statue was found in 1869, acquired in Egypt by Prince Hendrik of the Netherlands and donated by the Queen-Mother Emma to the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden (F. 1928/9.2) in 1928. In 1998 both parts were rejoined and the statue travels between the two museums.
